Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a much abused cocktail. Its been neglected, its had muddled fruit thrown into it, soda water drowning perfectly good whiskey and I once had one served to me with pineapple juice and a celery stick garnish. Fortunately this scrappy concoction has clawed its way back to fame with the help of a few TV shows, and resurgence in whiskey popularity.

Equipment: muddler (or spoon or knife), bar spoon, old fashioned glass (tumbler glass) and large ice cube

2 oz bourbon or rye (I used Woodford Reserve this time)

½ teaspoon demerara sugar

3 dashes Angostura bitters

Twist of orange for garnish

Place sugar in bottom of glass and add bitters and a splash of water (no more than a ½ teaspoon). Crush the sugar with bitters and water to combine and swirl to coat the bottom of the glass. Add large ice cube and pour in bourbon. Stir to combine and garnish with a twist of orange. Cheers!
